Options in groups

At Fons we only work with Shimano and Campagnolo group sets because they have the most advantages for most cyclists, such as: very high quality, reliability, worldwide availability of parts, options and a very well organized service networks. This means that you can have your Fons serviced anywhere
without technical problems or limited availability of parts. A comfortable idea we think.

The quality level of both the Shimano groups is indicated by the name. This makes comparisons not really easy if you are not familiar with this naming. That is why you will find the different Shimano and Campagnolo groups for the road bike below in the correct order. Starting with the groups for novice cyclistsor cyclists who simply cycle less intensively. Ascending to most advanced groupset with highest quality and lowest weight.

At Fons we work with both Shimano and Campagnolo groupsets because they have bundled the most benefits for avid cyclists, such as: very high quality, reliability, worldwide availability, options and a very close-knit service network. This means that you can have your Fons bike serviced almost anywhere without technical problems or limited availability of parts. An assuring idea according to us.

The quality level of the two brands is indicated by a name or a number. This makes comparisons not really easy if you are not familiar with this naming. That is why you will find the different Shimano and Campagnolo groupsets for racing and gravel bikes below in the correct order. Starting with the groups for novice cyclists or cyclists who simply ride less intensively. Ascending to the most advanced group set with the highest quality, the best shifting, precision and the lowest weight.

At Fons, we have chosen to provide various options in final assembly, depending on your budget, wishes and use, so that you can choose a Fons that completely suits your demands.

When the term 'group' or 'groupset' is used, it refers to the package of parts associated with the shifting and drivetrain of the bicycle. We are talking about things like shifters, brakes, crank, front and rear derailleur, chain and cassette. These parts together are called a group or groupset and are used in the construction (assembly) of bicycles. Each manufacturer has a number of groups of different quality levels in the range. These different groups are identified by their own name or number, for example Shimano Ultegra or Campagnolo Chorus. A groupset contains components of comparable quality. The difference in quality between the groups is noticeable in the speed, precision and reliability of the shifting, durability from the components, finish of the components and the overall weight.

You will have to use bikes intensively to notice the difference in shifting performance and durability. If you occasionally cycle a small loop in the summer months, you can ask yourself whether the most expensive group is a smart investment but if you want it and can afford it, why not?

When manufacturing road bikes, parts from the same group are often chosen. When it is said that a bicycle is assembled with Shimano Ultegra or Campagnolo Chorus, then mainly parts from that level are used. Sometimes manufacturers chose to use a mix of parts from different groups when building a bicycle. A higher quality is then chosen for parts that are visible, such as the shifters and derailleurs. Parts that wear relatively quickly than come from a lesser group. This way, manufacturers apparently try to keep the purchase price off the bike little lower or achieve a higher profit. We think that's not the way to go!

At Fons, we generally do not mix high-quality and lower-quality parts. We believe that if you expect to buy a certain level of quality, you should get it. In fact, all our bikes, even if they are equipped with lower end groep sets, are fitted with the highest level quality chain and you will notice this during shifting and due to the longer lasting the lifetime. Note: during the recent parts scarcity, we have unfortunately been forced to mix some parts. However, we have managed to keep this to a minimum.

The Shimano 105 group is the best choice if you are looking for a very good price/quality ratio and if you use your road bike for normal sporty use. The difference in quality between 105 and Ultegra is much smaller than often thought, the 105 group is a bit heavier and some savings have been made on details in the finishing. The shifting is also slightly less fast than with the more expensive groupsets, but you really notice this difference under heavy load. Certainly the last 105 group is already an amazing piece of technology that has been inherited from his predecessors.

The Ultegra group is the perfect choice for the demanding cyclist who demands the maximum from his equipment, but does not necessarily have to cycle with the most expensive and most exclusive material. Shimano Ultegra is the gear group for cyclists who want an amazing price/quality ratio. This group is not inferior to Dura Ace in terms of shifting performance, but is a lot more affordable. Almost all techniques of Dura Ace are included, only the materials that are used is slightly cheaper. As a result, the weight is slightly higher and the parts look just slightly less finished. The Shimano Ultegra is available with both mechanical or electronic shifting.

The Shimano Dura Ace group is Shimano's showpiece and really something for you if you opt for top quality. Bicycles fitted with Dura Ace can be seen in the pro peloton and among the fanatic amateurs for whom only the very best is good enough. The speed and precision of the shifting of the Dura Ace group are sublime and the weight of the parts is minimal. Dura Ace is available with an electronic (Di2) or mechanical control. The last version of Dura Ace was just launched in 2021, the group is also available with hydraulic disc brakes in this new version. If you really want to spoil yourself and budget is not an obstacle, then this is a fantastic choice for you!

You've seen the abbreviation come up a few times. Di2 is Shimano's technology to operate the derailleurs via an electronic control. That way you can shift “even” lighter, extremely fast and very precisely. Our frames are suitable for mounting Di2 groups. If you want to use Di2 material, you have to take into account that the battery is charged when you want to go cycling, but that is not a real in daily practice because you can ride an amazing amount of kilometers before you have to recharge the battery. Di2 does require an extra investment but the technique used is especially beautiful if you want to spoil yourself enormously.

The Campagnolo Chorus 12-speed groupset is a further example of transmission for high-performance racing bikes, dedicated to a wider public looking for a high-level, versatile product.  Thanks also to the specific 48/32 and 11-34 combinations, the Chorus mechanical groupset is ideal for those who love spending long hours on racing bikes on mixed routes, because it maintains the racing performance guaranteed by every Campagnolo racing bike groupset: from Gran Fondo to adventurous sunday rides, to outings after work.

As always, different materials are used - with consequently less additional weight - combined with a rear derailleur redesigned to accommodate larger cassettes. These are the main features that differentiate the new Chorus 12-speed groupset from the Super Record 12-speed and Record 12-speed groupsets

The Campagnolo Record 12-speed groupset is the iconic road bike groupset: versatile, with typical Campagnolo high quality and reliability.  This 12-speed mechanical groupset has lots of features, all designed to meet the needs of the road cyclist: the front derailleur, designed for compatibility with increasingly popular wide tires; the new, even more efficient crankset; and the Ergopower controls, safer and more ergonomic than ever; plus the 12-speed rear derailleur capable of accommodating sprockets with 11 to 34 teeth.  This mechanical groupset for road bikes is available at Fons in the disc brake version only.

The Campagnolo Super Record 12-speed groupset is only available on special request.

The Campagnolo Super Record 12-speed groupset is the maximum expression of Campagnolo racing bike groupsets, the ultimate in functionality, materials and weight.  A perfect mix, to generate unparalleled performance. This road bike groupset is available in both EPS electronic and mechanical models, for both traditional and disc brakes, giving a total of 4 possibilities to choose from. The innovative technology of this rear derailleur ensures smooth and precise shifting for maximum performance on racing bikes.  In the electronic versions you can also customize the functioning of the EPS electronic groupset using the MyCampy app.  The Super Record EPS front and rear derailleurs are also exceptional - made with high-tech materials, such as carbon fibres and ultra-light techno-polymers.  For disc brake enthusiasts, the braking system uses an innovative pad return system that guarantees reliable, adjustable and fast braking.

Options in brakes

At Fons we love cycling hard and fast, but we also like to come home safe and sound. Driving fast means that you also have to be able to brake hard and that preferably
under all circumstances. That is why all Fons Bikes are equipped with disc brakes only!

The disc brake works better than the conventional brake in almost every area and is seen by many as the future for the racing bike. At Fons we are really convinced of the enormous added value of the disc brake since day one. You can dose the braking power much better with a disc brake, which gives you more control while cycling hence more safety.

Compared to the conventional brakes, the disc brake works much better in all weather conditions. You can excellent braking power even in wet conditions, because you don't have to brake/scrub the dirt from your rims first. This means you come to a stand still meters earlier in wet weather conditions and that can make the difference between a collision or a safe stop.

Disc brakes allow you to mount wider tires with a lower rolling resistance and shorter brake distance. Allowing you to drive even more comfortably with more grip and speed. Because there is no wear on the rim, your wheels can also last longer! Due to the disc brake, the frictional heat of the brake is not directly on your rim, so that you can also say goodbye to the risk of a blown tire due to overheating!

Another important advantage in our opinion is that designers and riders no longer are less limited when choosing the width of tires and wheel sizes. That gives you more freedom of choice.

Fons equips its bikes with the latest standard of available and proven techniques. We use 12mm  UCI sized thru-axles for a stiffer mounting of the wheels, so you avoid twisting and squeaking brakes. In addition, we use the compact flat mount mounting of the calipers and we only use hydraulic brakes because they perform much more consistently. We value your safety enormously!

Options in wheels

At Fons, in addition to the colour, finish, brakes, groups and size, you can also choose which wheels you want on your road bike. You can choose from wheels of different heights and materials i.e. going for aerodynamics or ultra light.  For our optional carbon wheels we work together with the Dutch brands Scope and ERE research. These brands are known for its incredibly good value for money. You’ll have a choice of different rim heights, weights and you can also choose which tire colour you want. This means you can always find a wheelset that suits you and the riding you do on your custom-made Fons.
